I Spoke Too Soon: The 2022 Orioles Are NOT in the Basement

This is the type of retraction I’m happy to write.

Because after writing back on April 22 that the 2022 Orioles had “settled into the basement” on April 12 of this season…the Birds eventually climbed up the stairs — ever so slightly.

On Thursday, May 5 the Orioles moved out of the cellar and into a fourth place tie with the Boston Red Sox.

And as of this writing — before play begins on May 13 — the Orioles are actually ahead of the cellar-dwelling Red Sox by 2 1/2 games.

The team’s recent hot stretch — where they’ve won 8 of their last 12 games — has been most impressive…and it’s come at a time when the Red Sox have been struggling.

It’s entirely possible that the team continues its run of good pitching. And that the upcoming promotions of Adley Rutschman, Grayson Rodriguez, DL Hall and others continue to spark the team and maybe move up the timeline of the team’s rebuild ever so slightly.

Anyway, let’s hope that this subject does not have to be revisiting — and that the Birds remain ahead of the Red Sox for the rest of the season.

If that’s the case, I’d again be more than happy to admit I was wrong about the team “settling into the basement” way back in early April.
